TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The experts classifying large-scale volcanic eruptions by the volcano eruption or called VEI (Volcanic explosivity index). This index is sorted into the eight-scale eruption. The larger the index number, the more severe eruptions as well.
Page Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History said the eruption grouped into eight levels. Each level is categorized based on the amount of volcanic material spewed.
The eruption of Mount Toba happened 77 thousand years ago, for example, 3000 cubic kilometers of material spewing from the bowels of the Earth, making it the largest eruption in human history, as well as placing it on the index 8. Seven ancient colossal eruption on Sumatra has a minimum volume of eruptions between 0.6 to 18.0 cubic kilometers.
Therefore, Sumatra eruptions are at least at index 5. But, volcano researchers from Oregon State University, Morgan Salisbury, estimate the amount of material that can spit out bigger. Colossal eruption in Sumatra, where grew 35 volcanoes, not much is known researcher volcano.
"Sumatra is the most active volcanic regions on the planet," said Salisbury told Tempo. "However, few studies eruptive history in this area." With the scale of the eruption is only one level below eruption of Krakatoa, the next big eruption could occur in the near future. He believes researchers can estimate the time when the next eruption of Sumatra volcano research intensive.
